Sunday Mix: New Voices

Posted by Justin Boland on Jan 23, 2011 | 0 Comments

For this Sunday Mix, the focus is on some new acts. I wanted to spotlight some of the emcees who have really impressed me in 2010, from Fashawn (duh) to Che Grand (don’t sleep). I might have also included a couple of the best rappers alive, like Elzhi and Black Thought, in the process. Really sorry about that. It will happen again.

Get situated and pay close attention to the words…

ARTISTS FEATURED…

  • Black Milk with Royce the 5‘9” and Elzhi - Deadly Medley From his amazing Album of the Year, this track was an obvious highlight for 2010. The verses are all face-melters, and as usual, Elzhi manages to show up everyone.
  • Che Grand - Uche the Great - perfect slice of hip hop — jazzy, loose on the beats and tight on the lyrics. I catch myself leaving this on repeat for close to an hour sometimes…
  • Von Pea - The Yorker - he’s a part of Tanya Morgan but this solo joint worked it’s way into heavy rotation so far this year…once he gets the flow going, this is a damn workout.
  • Curren$y ft. Mos Def and Jay Electronica - The Day - it’s no secret: the best part of Curren$y is Ski Beatz, who provided a beautiful backdrop for this. Jay Elec steals the show, obviously.
  • Money Making Jam Boys - Tear it Up - This song is juice. Looking forward to their work this year, for my money, this is the best supergroup going in hip hop today.
  • Stalley - The Tune Up - Until Stalley tightens up his writing, at least his choice in beats is flawless. This is a gem, extended outro and everything…
  • Fashawn - Manny Pacquiao - Fashawn is definitely one of the best things to happen last year. This track is BRUTAL. You will definitely hear more Fashawn from us in the future, too.
  • Chuuwee - French Inhale - Had to check this kid out…he’s a monster on verses, but all of his hooks are pretty boring…this is no exception.
